NFL Adding a 17th Game Opinion

Since Roger Goodell has been commissioner of the National Football League he has wanted a longer regular season with less pre season games. Most fans, including myself would be more than happy if this change occurred. The main people that this benefits are the fans and that is what football is supposed to be all about, even though at some points it is not. Around the league, season ticket holders of every team are forced into buying pre season tickets to all four games if they want to purchase the regular season games. That in itself is robbery but the teams still get fans to do it anyway. With one less pre season game and one more meaningful game it gives season ticket holders much more for their money. On the other hand, for the fans at home, which will be most people in this ruff economy, you will be able to watch one game with a purpose sometime into February. Hardly anyone watches the pre season games so this gives the teams an extra game of excellent fan attendance and television ratings. One more positive part to adding an extra game to the regular season is that it gives teams trying to get into the playoffs one more game to do so. Every game in the NFL is important because the season is so short, but if an extra game were added, one loss to a divisional rival would not completely ruin a team’s playoff hopes. The middle party here are the owners, an extra game would have little effect on them. However the game schedule turns out there will still be a total of twenty-one games played, with around the same amount of ticket sales. With that said, the owners can go either way with this scheduling dilemma. Then the opposite side of the coin is the actual players. The star players would be opposed to this because pre season games are a hang out for them since they only play two quarters at most. The other type of players are the ones to trying to make an NFL squad, they have one less game to prove to the coaching staffs that they deserve a spot on the team. So for the players overall, this extra regular season game does not make sense. I am sure that the Players Association will try to put this off another season as they have done since the Goodell Era. My overall feeling is that one extra game will be added to the regular season and a pre season game will be taken away. Of course the NFL franchises are concerned about making money, but to make money they must keep the fans happy. I am sure that most football fans would greatly enjoy this change and since Commissioner Goodell wants it as well it will happen in the near future getting ready for the 2009-2010 season.

March Madness 2nd Round Re-Cap

On Saturday and Sunday, the remaining 32 teams of the NCAA tournament faced off with trips to the “sweet 16” for the winners. In the Midwest the #1 seed Louisville took on an ultra confident Siena team that hit 2 buzzer beaters to get by Ohio State in the first round. In this game Siena had a ton of confidence in the beginning of the game and stuck with Louisville. But in the end Louisville was too much for Siena and the Cardinals won 79-72. In the second game of the Midwest, Arizona and Cleveland State, fresh of their huge upsets battled it out. #12 Arizona led for most of the game and came away with the easy victory 71-57. In the third game Dayton took on Kansas. Dayton played a very sloppy game and couldn’t hit many shots only because of this they only scored 43 points. This left the door wide open for #3 Kansas and they took the win and advanced on a 60-43 victory. The last game of the Midwest was the best. USC and Michigan State met up and played a great game. Down the stretch coach Tom Izzo showed why he is one of the best coaches in the game today. He kept his Spartans calm and collected and #2 Michigan Sate edged out # 10 USC 74-69.

In the west region, #1 UCONN beat up Texas A&M and won 92-66. In the second game in the west, Purdue and Washington played in the battle of the #4 against #5 seeds. In an unbelievable game Purdue was up by two points and Washington had the ball with under a minute remaining in the game. On that possession both of Washington’s guards had shots blocked by Jujuan Johnson who had 22 points and the #5 Purdue Boilermakers upset Washington 76-74 to advance to the Sweet 16. In the third game Missouri took on Marquette. With less than 6 seconds in the game, Missouri’s English came of the bench and hit two free throws to put Missouri up two. On the inbounds pass, Marquette’s Lazar Hayward stepped over the baseline which gave the ball back to Missouri and cost Marquette a chance to move on. #3 Missouri won 83-79. In the last game of the west, Memphis learned from their close call in the first round to Cal State Northridge. #2 Memphis controlled the tempo of this game against Maryland throughout. They wound up taking care of Maryland 89-70.

In the East bracket, #1 Pittsburgh and Oklahoma State played a great game. Oklahoma State played basket for basket with Pittsburgh but the #1 seed was too much to handle. DeJuan Blair dominated the inside at the end of the game and lead Pittsburgh to an 84-76 victory. The second game had Xavier playing a bracket buster team in Wisconsin. In the first round, Wisconsin upset Florida State and was looking to continue the magic against Xavier. Xavier played a solid game all around and Wisconsin couldn’t hit the jump shot. #4 Xavier won 60-49. In the third game, # 3Villanova dominated both sides of the ball and crushed UCLA by 20 points 89-69. In the final game of the east, Duke and Texas faced off. The game was close throughout but # 2 Duke found a way to stop A.J. Abrams at the end of the game and took home the victory 74-69.

In the final bracket, the South, #1 North Carolina pulled away from LSU late. Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington both had 23 points for the Tar Heels. UNC won 84-70. In the second game, #12 Western Kentucky and #4 Gonzaga played a back and forth game. With 0.9 seconds left, Goodson made a lay-up to give Gonzaga a 2 point lead. They held off a last second heave by Western Kentucky and won 83-81. In the third game, #3 Syracuse controlled the game against Arizona State and beat them by 11 points. In the last game of the 2nd round Blake Griffin showed why he is the player of the year. #2 Oklahoma beat down Michigan 73-63

Sweet 16 Predictions

#1 Louisville vs. #12 Arizona- Louisville
#3 Kansas vs. #2 Michigan State- Michigan State
#1 UCONN vs. #5 Purdue- UCONN
#3 Missouri vs. #2 Memphis- Memphis
#1 Pittsburgh vs. #4 Xavier- Xavier
#3 Villanova vs. #2 Duke- Villanova
#1 UNC vs. #4 Gonzaga- UNC
#3 Syracuse vs. #2 Oklahoma- Oklahoma

NCAA Tournament Round 1 Recap

The Big Dance AKA the NCAA Tournament is underway and it is as exciting as ever. The action began on Thursday and sixteen games were scheduled. Only one major upset occurred and it happened when #12 seeded Western Kentucky defeated Illinois by the score of 76-72. Other than that one game the toss-ups went either way and the powerhouses dominated their opponents. #1 ranked Connecticut made a joke out of Chattanooga wining 103-47 and the other #1 seed North Carolina beat Radford 101-58. That was Thursday, and Friday was when the upsets began. The first upset, which may be the best one throughout the entire tournament, was when #13 Cleveland State dominated #4 Wake Forest 84-69. Wake Forest fell into the trap; they underestimated their first round opponent. Some people may argue that there are too many teams in the Big Dance but all of them still have quality players. The next upset was #9 Siena defeating #8 seed and Big Ten force Ohio State. This double overtime thriller ended 74-72 in favor of the Saints. Another unexpected win was by the Arizona Wildcats when they beat Utah 84-71. The final upset, and the only Big East team to lose in the first round was West Virginia. Dayton outplayed them to the score of 68-60. Day two of the Tourney was definitely more exciting then day one and I am very interested to see how these lower seeds play in their second round match ups. Today we start round two with eight games scheduled and eight more on Sunday. Here are my picks for today’s games.

#6 UCLA Vs. #3 Villanova Winner = Villanova
#8 LSU Vs. #1 North Carolina Winner= North Carolina
#12 Western Kentucky Vs. #4 Gonzaga Winner= Western Kentucky
#10 Maryland Vs. #2 Memphis Winner= Memphis
#5 Purdue Vs. #4 Washington Winner= Purdue
#7 Texas Vs. #2 Duke Winner= Duke
#10 Michigan Vs. #2 Oklahoma Winner= Oklahoma
#9 Texas A&M Vs. #1 UCONN Winner= UCONN

My feeling is that Western Kentucky will keep the great running going a defeat a very overrated Gonzaga Bulldogs team. Other than that the higher seeds will prevail because of their excellent play and deep benches. Check back tomorrow for picks regarding the next eights games and a recap of today’s action.

Recent World Baseball Classic Injuries

As the exciting World Baseball Classic goes into the later stages we have seen many players go down with injuries, most notably Red Sox MVP Dustin Pedroia and Yankees All-Star Robinson Cano. Both of these talented men are important players on their perspective teams and because of this the question is posed, “Overall, is the WBC good or bad for Major League Baseball?” The answer is that it is a combination of both. The positive aspects are that fans are greatly enjoying these early games, when in past years we would be watching boring spring training ones with players we have never heard of. Another good part of the Classic is that it gives the players real, meaningful in game situations even before the season starts. On the other hand, that is also a negative because some people feel it is too early to put these guys into real game situations while they have been resting during the off season. My response to these critics is that when you are a major league baseball player there is no off-season. Believe me, every single player is working out during the off-season. Either they are trying to earn a roster spot or continue to play at a high level that they played at the year before. Another problem with the WBC is the timing, most MLB teams do not want their players missing spring training but such a large event like this gives the players an excuse. The only other possible time when these games could be played is after the World Series but then everyone would be too tired after the lengthy 162 game seasons. All in all, the World Baseball Classic is definitely great for everyone it gives the fans the great baseball action they desire and the players get competitive spring training tune ups for the regular season. Since baseball has been eliminated from the Olympics the WBC is taking its place and so far it has done a very good job. No matter what sport you play there is always a possible chance for injury. Even though a few key players have gotten hurt you cannot get rid of an entire tournament just because of a small percentage of players. The main reason the World Baseball Classic is so special is that no one would be intensely following baseball right now if it weren’t for this great March event.

The Brackets Are Set

On Sunday, the NCAA basketball postseason started for 65 lucky teams. The madness will start with first round action on Thursday. Last night it was announced that the number one seeds in the tournament would consist of Louisville, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina. The number two seeds consisted of Michigan State, Memphis, Duke, and Oklahoma. The last two bubble teams to make it into the tournament were Michigan and Arizona. Of coarse the day after the selections many fans were displeased with the fact that their team didn’t make it into the tournament but I feel as though this year the committee got it right. The only thing I disagree with is that with only three loses, Memphis should’ve been a #1 seed and UConn should’ve been a #2 seed. With that said, this year the committee did a great job with their selection and for the most part everybody was satisfied with the spot that their team got. Here are some intriguing first round match ups, which we will have to keep an eye on for upsets. My predictions are as follows:

12 Arizona def 5 Utah

9 Siena def 8 Ohio State

10 USC def Boston College

9 Texas A&M def BYU

13 Mississippi state def Washington

10 Maryland def 7 California

9 Tennessee def 8 Oklahoma State

11 VCU def 6 UCLA

12 W. Kentucky def 5 Illinois

It’s going to be interesting to see how many of these underdogs pull of their upsets.

In my bracket I have the elite 8 looking like this:

1 Louisville vs. 6 West Virginia

1 UCONN vs. 2. Memphis

5 Florida State vs. 3. Villanova

1 UNC vs. 2. Oklahoma

In my bracket I have the final 4 looking like this:

1 Louisville vs. 2 Memphis

3 Villanova vs. 1 UNC

In the first matchup, I feel that although Louisville has a great team and is the first overall seed in the tournament, Memphis has something to prove to the college basketball world for not giving them a #1 seed in the tournament. I think that Memphis will edge out Louisville in what will be one of the best games of the tournament. In this game I can see it being won by a last second shot or it might even have to be settled in overtime.

In the second match up, Tyler Hansborough, and Ty Lawson will prove to be too much for a talented Villanova team. North Carolina will take care of business and advance into the National Championship game.

National Championship:

2 Memphis vs. 1 North Carolina:

In last years National Championship game Memphis was seconds away from winning it all when Mario Chalmers nailed a three point shot for Kansas to tie the game up and push it into overtime. In overtime Kansas took control of the game and won the title. This year Memphis is out for revenge. They feel disrespected and feel as though they need to win the title this year to be considered a national powerhouse in college basketball. North Carolina on the other hand is already considered one of the best teams of this decade and they are trying to prove that they are a dynasty of college basketball. This game will be a very psychical affair. Tyler Hansborough will dominate inside and draw a double team. This will then open up the three point shot for North Carolina’s guards. I feel that Carolina will win this game and cut down the nets as the National Champions of college basketball.

National Champion:

NORTH CAROLINA

Baseball is back in action!

Although the Major League Baseball season will not start until the beginning of April, intense baseball action has already began in the form of the World Baseball Classic. Sixteen countries started to compete in a double elimination tournament last week. The favorites of the competition were the Dominican Republic, the United States, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and defending champion, Japan. The teams were divided into four pools consisting of four countries in each. In pool A, Japan got off to a quick start and won their first two games to qualify them for the next round. Joining them from pool A was Korea, who took care of China 14-1 and then beat Japan to lock up the one seed. In pool B, the two favorites Cuba and Mexico advanced to the second round and they will play tonight to determine who will get the first seed in the pool. In Mexico’s first game of the tournament they were upset 17-7 by Australia. Because of the drastic score the game was called for the mercy rule. Mexico then came back and won their last two games including a 16-1 win over Australia. That huge win advanced them to the next round. Pool C was the most intriguing pool of them all. There were three excellent teams battling for two spots. These teams were the United States, Venezuela and Canada. In the first two games team U.S.A. knocked off Canada in a very close game 6-5. In their next game they played Venezuela and blew them out 15-6. This win advanced them to round two of the tournament. In a huge shocker, Italy defeated Canada 6-2. That loss eliminated Canada from the competition. This left the second seed to Venezuela who beat Canada 10-1 to advance. Venezuela then locked up the 1 seed when K-rod saved a game against the U.S.A. In the last pool it was supposed to be Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to advance, but after the Dominican Republic team lost to Netherlands in their first game everyone knew that it wasn’t going to be easy for the D.R. Puerto Rico had locked up the first seed but the second seed was still up for grabs. After the Dominican team beat Panama 9-0 all they had to do was get revenge and beat a Netherlands team with no MLB players. The score was 0-0 through 10 innings when the Dominican Republic scored in the top of the 11th to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the inning the Netherlands tied up the game 1-1 and had a runner on third with two out when there was a line drive to first that went off the first baseman’s glove and rolled into foul territory. At that moment the celebration began. Who would’ve dreamed that a team with no major league players could beat a team who was the favorite to win this competition and had multiple all-star players! After this amazing feat who knows what other unbelievable moments are yet to come. Tune in Saturday and Sunday, as the second round will start on ESPN and the MLB Network.

The Yankee Years Book Review

The book The Yankee Years was written by Joe Torre and Tom Verduci. The only thing the title does not tell you is that it is written by Tom Verduci, with sporadic quotes here and there by Joe Torre.  So, when you go to read this book don’t expect to see Joe’s own writing, because you won’t find it. With that said, now I will discuss what I thought of the book, both positive and negative. The first main idea of the book that kept my interest throughout was the discussion of each player’s character, on and off the field. For example, Joe says that everyone thinks Derek Jeter is such a nice, quiet and calm guy, however that is just how he acts around the media. In the clubhouse or during practice when no one is around he is much louder and he can really get on his teammates if he doesn’t like the effort they are giving. That is one thing I never thought of, Derek is a smart guy and he realizes that the media does not have to know everything about him and he has the power to make up whatever he wants. Another entertaining part of the book, that shocked me to be in there was how much respect Joe Torre has for Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. While I was reading the chapter about Theo, I really wondered how it related to “The Yankee Years” but it actually does. Tom Verduci says how Torre always was fascinated about how Epstein ran the Boston Red Sox. The things he liked the most were how they were able to balance a strong farm system and still have superstar players on their major league team. This is something that every MLB team is trying to do and Joe felt that the Red Sox, his arch rival, did it best. The final positive part of the book that really stood out to me was how vividly each Yankee moment was described. As a young child in 2001 I remember seeing Luis Gonzalez hit the game winning single up the middle to beat the Yankees in the World Series. That moment was so greatly described that it really brought me back to 2001. Even though the Yankees lost, it is still a great baseball memory that I will always have. On the other hand, there were also multiple points made in the book that were out of line and extremely unnecessary. The first main one that really hit me was the entire Alex Rodriguez chapter. I heard before I read the book that A-ROD was really hit hard but I didn’t expect it to be this bad. For example, I will paraphrase a key point made by Joe Torre. Joe said that every year he invites players to his big Safe at Home Foundation dinner where he raises money for abused children, he stated that he only invites players who live in New York because he doesn’t want other players to feel obligated to come. When the dinner was soon coming up, A-ROD came over to him and said he would like to come, Joe said, your wife is pregnant and you should stay with her, Alex responded by saying he would still like to go. Then the day before the dinner, A-ROD called up Torre and said he can no longer attend, Joe cordially said okay, but in his mind he was extremely upset. The chapter ends when Torre says, “I wouldn’t expect anything else from a guy like Alex Rodriguez.” I understand that Joe and Alex did not get along but that was an extremely harsh part of the book. Things like that should have never been repeated to others, but to sell books and make money people will do a lot of things. All in all, The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verduci is a must read for any Yankee fan, not just because of the he said, she said part of it because it does a great job of summarizing the team’s history. My only advice is that if you are not a Yankee fan do not bother reading it because it will just seem like a bunch of gossip.

Which team will Terrell Owens play for?

On Thursday the Dallas Cowboys released their superstar wide receiver Terrell Owens. T.O. is arguably the best receiver on the field but he is also one of the biggest problem players in the NFL, off it. The Cowboys have a reputation of giving problem players second chances, like Pacman Jones, but they finally had enough with Owens. Any team he has went to, which includes the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys; he destroys all of the teams’ chemistry and aggravates each of those teams’ quarterbacks. First, T.O. came into the NFL as a 49er and his relationship with his quarterback Jeff Garcia was terrible, because of that he was traded to the Eagles. Then as a member of the Eagles he had the same exact problem, except this time with Donovan McNabb. Donovan would not stand for Terrell’s immaturity about not getting the ball and he told this to the Eagles front office. After that, Owens was traded to the big market Dallas Cowboys. While a member of Dallas he and Tony Romo did not get along causing another trade situation. The question people are asking is, “Where will Terrell Owens go?” Before I begin to give my opinion on that matter I would just like to they that it does not make sense for any team to be interested in him. Don’t get me wrong, T.O. is a great player but everything that happens off the field with him outweighs the positives. Owens can catch fifteen touchdowns for a team in a season with over one thousand receiving yards but he will also drive your quarterback crazy. That is my opinion is not worth the aggravation. The quarterback is the star and leader of every NFL team and T.O. refuses to realize that. Now back to where he will wind up, Terrell is too good of a player not to have a team. One of the thirty-two organizations will be willing to take a risk on him; however, it will not be the Jets or the Giants. The New York Jets definitely need a wide receiver to help out whichever young quarterback they decide to start for week one. The only problem is that T.O. will think he can boss them around and either Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff will feel pressured to give him the ball. If they don’t they are probably worried they will be screamed at on the sideline, as T.O. has a reputation to do that if he is not getting his way. The other New York team is the Giants, they too are also in need of a quality wide receiver but Owens is not the man for them. Eli Manning is an above average quarterback physically but his leadership skills are sub par, because of this, even though he is a veteran he will not be able to put T.O. in his place. In most cases the quieter quarterbacks are better for a locker room but if a team wants Terrell they are going to need a quarterback who is willing to stand up to him. The team that I feel will most likely sign Terrell Owens is the Indianapolis Colts, the reason is because Peyton Manning is the more vocal of the two Manning bothers. If T.O. begins one of his regular fits either during practice or a game Peyton has the ability to confront him, which is something that the quarterbacks he previously played with never did. Peyton Manning is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and believe me he is not scared of some whiney wide receiver. Terrell Owens will not end up on the Jets or the Giants but for fans of both teams, you guys are much better off without him in the long run, let another team gamble on whether or not they think he will ruin their team.

NCAA Mens Basketball Big East Review

As the men’s college basketball regular season comes to a close I think its time to re cap our local major conference, the Big East. For people who haven’t been following it, this article is a must read because it will help you in your March Madness pools. When the preseason pools came out a few months ago the Big East had eight teams in the top twenty-five, this was the most all time by any conference and every team thought they were a contender for the National Championship. Now that the regular season is coming to a close that is not the case but four of those eight are still in the mix. Those teams are Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Marquette. Connecticut is (15-2) in conference play, (27-2) overall and the #1 ranked team in the country. Their record is extremely impressive and it is because of their superstar roster of players. Every year Jim Calhoun puts together an unbelievable team even while having many of his players leave for the NBA at the end of every season. This is because he is one of the top recruiters in the country and many high school kids want to go to UCONN because is it such a storied program. Big man Hasheem Thabeet is unstoppable as of late and so has senior guard A.J. Price. Their team is so deep that they are almost impossible to beat, except for their slip up against Pittsburgh. The next team is Louisville, who are (14-2) in the Big East, (23-5) overall and #6 in the country. The Cardinals are coached by basketball legend and former New York Knicks coach Rick Pitino. Pitino is another great recruiter and this year is no exception, he has a great team that is definitely in contention to win the Big East tournament and possibly the National Championship. They have a great point guard in senior Andre McGee; he runs the entire offense and rarely turns the ball over. The next top Big East team is Pittsburgh; they are (13-3) in conference, (26-3) overall and ranked #3 nationally. The thing that impresses me the most about the Panthers is that they beat Connecticut. There was so much pressure on them to win that game and they pulled it off. The way they did it was by getting physical; they grabbed offense rebounds and forced turnovers. That is all about desire and they wanted to win more than UCONN. That was a great game and it showed fans that they could handle a big game atmosphere. Handling pressure is key especially during the later rounds of the NCAA tournament when the fan attendance gets to huge numbers. The final contender, however not likely, is the Marquette Golden Eagles. They have posted a record of (12-4) in the Big East, (23-6) overall and they are ranked #13 in the country. Their best player and leader is senior guard Wesley Matthews, he scored 19 points in their last game against Louisville. Marquette has posted a solid record but they do not have a good enough big man to compete against other top teams. As you can see, the tops teams such as Connecticut and Louisville have veteran coaches that know how to recruit. They also have outstanding senior guards that run their offense. With that said, the key to winning in college basketball is having a veteran coaches and players. UCONN and Louisville have this and it is putting them in a position to go far in March Madness.

Daniel Weberman’s pick for the Big East tournament champion is- Connecticut, they let Pittsburgh beat them once but Jim Calhoun will have them ready for round two if they both reach the tournament final.
